Blog Post #10: Career and College Readiness |
Isabella Robledo |
Before I had started my internship, I was really indecisive about what I wanted my future to look like and what I wanted to major in after high school. I knew where I wanted to go for college and what activities I wanted to do but I didn't know what it was that I was interested in taking seriously and taking on in the "real world" as a career. My dream was to go to UC-Irvine but thinking more realistically this year, I'm probably going to have to start planning on doing a couple of years at a community college to make up for any credits that are required before transferring to a university (still haven't decided which would best fit me). I'm still unsure because things can change over time. It was very challenging trying to plan out which path I wanted to take to pursue a career in what I love and what I'm comfortable in. I was really unsure of what I wanted my future to look like. That changed though within my four weeks of not being in school. It was my internship at the Bressi Ranch Pet Hospital that helped me find what my interests and strong suits were in the veterinary field. The project that I've been working on at my internship went around the history, health concerns, and board on the outer appearance and skeletal structure of a golden retriever. This project mainly went around biology, zoology, and a few psychological traits that are hereditary. These are things that I never expected myself to find interest in but every day I would learn something new about myself and I learned more about the requirements to being a veterinary technician since that was what I found myself being more drawn to. During my time at my internship, I learned a lot about canines and felines, their health concerns depending on breed, their anatomy, personality and temperament, and heredity traits. Trying to find an answer to all of these things for my project, I spent most of my time on the other side of the hospital wing called 'Boarding' where all the non-sick or injured pets hang out. I would be there during playtime while conducting research on the dogs interactions with the same breed and interactions with a different breed.
